beggers

Four months into our move, I continue to find more and more significant differences between Iowa and Texas!! I originally blogged about it here, but it's funny to get someone else's perspective too. While my parents were here, my dad kept finding differences between the two. To name a few, it's free here in Iowa to air up your tires....in Texas you have to pay for air. All of the stop signs, yield signs, etc. have a pole made out of wood...in Texas, those same signs have a metal pole. My dad pointed out that a TON of people here have flip phones (he is SO right!!!!)....you don't see many of those in Texas. It's just those little things you notice when you've lived in the same place your entire life!

Well, another more recent one that I still don't get is how they do trick or treating. First of all, Iowans don't trick or treat on October 31st. Well, a few do....it's done by counties. Depending on where you live determines when you go trick or treating (I only know of one county that goes on Oct. 31st). Secondly, it's not trick or treating....it's called 'beggers night' (since you beg for candy). And lastly, when you go beg for candy, you actually have to work for it! 75% of the people passing out candy will ask you to tell them a joke....and you don't get candy until someone in the group tells a joke! Did I mention I'm from Texas? All of this just seems so foreign to me. The best joke of the night came from Kylie (in my biased opinion), just for the simple fact that she actually told a joke at all!! She is so shy in front of strangers, so I was shocked!

Kylie: Why did the puppy dog cross the road? Because he forgot his cell phone.

On Thursday, Kylie got to wear her Halloween costume to school and they had a little parade, so we stopped by Husband's work on the way to school to surprise him....

Sweet girl was so ready to play with her friends!

A few of her buds!

So tonight, on 'beggers night' we met at a neighbors house and 7 kiddos and 3 adults went begging for candy.

Left to right (the boys): John, Kole (acting like he is going to eat John), Gage, Tyler and Reid.

And my sweet ladybugs!!!

This was one of the houses that we stopped by that was ALL kinds of decked out!

Oh, I forgot to mention that all the boys (AKA Husbands) stayed behind to pass out candy, so when we returned home, the kiddos played for a while and we visited.

I hope you guys have a great Halloween....whatever day it is that you celebrate! :) Just out of curiosity have any of you heard this? Does your town/neighborhood do this? I'd love to hear!!!
